Residential Electric Vehicle Charging Station Rebate Rules

Eligibility

  • This rebate is available only to current Silicon Valley Power (SVP) residential customers who are under a residential rate schedule. Landlords may participate if their tenant is an eligible SVP residential customer.
  • The charging station(s) must be installed at the Customer’s service address.
  • Customer intends to operate the charging station at the listed service address for its useful life.
  • Submit the rebate application within 60 days of the building permit issuance date or purchase date if no permit is required.

Payment

  • Rebate amounts are up to $350 per charging station. An electric vehicle charging station with multiple ports, or plugs, is considered one unit and is eligible for a single rebate.
  • Level 2 charging stations that are either hardwired or not hardwired (i.e., NEMA 14-50 receptacle) are eligible for a rebate up to $350.
  • Limit of two (2) charging station rebates per residential account.
  • The rebate amount cannot exceed the purchase price of the charging station plus installation and permit fees, excluding taxes, shipping costs, discounts, and additional incentives received by Customer (i.e., other rebates or grants).
  • Rebates are valid for purchases made with United States currency only (i.e., no store credit or credit card points).

Charging Station Requirements

  • Must be a Level 2 (240-volt) charging station.
  • Level 2 charging cords and mobile connectors are not eligible.
  • Chargers not hardwired must be Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Splitters are not eligible.
  • Must be a new unit. Charging stations that are portable, resold, rebuilt, received from warranty insurance, or promotional offers are not eligible for rebates under this program.
  • Must be certified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL Listed), ETL Listed, or approved by the City of Santa Clara Building Department.

Required Documents

  • Rebate Application
  • Sales receipt for eligible EV charger must include purchase date, purchase amount, and brand and model number.
  • Sales receipt for materials, if applicable, must identify the item used for the installation and include purchase date and purchase amount.
  • Sales invoice from contractor, if applicable, must include invoice date, contractor’s license number, name and address of contractor, and price paid for installation.

Building Permit Requirements

  • All electrical work must be in accordance with local codes, permitting, and inspection requirements. If your project requires a building permit, proof of permit issuance from the City of Santa Clara’s building department must be submitted to receive a rebate. Please call (408) 615-2420 or visit the Permit Center website for more information.
  • Installing a Level 2 charging station may require a permit from the City of Santa Clara’s Building Department.
  • All electrical work must be in accordance with local codes, permitting, inspection requirements, and any American Disability Act (ADA) requirements, if applicable.
  • Please visit the City of Santa Clara’s Permit Center website or call (408) 615-2420 for EV charging permit requirements.
  • A permit is required for a new circuit installation which would include either an outlet or hard-wired Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE). An over-the-counter permit is not required for non-hardwired level 2 charging stations that will be plugged-in to an existing outlet.
  • If there is an existing circuit that is not being modified and you are only changing the outlet for a hard-wired EVSE that would not require a permit.
  • If you are making an upgrade to an existing circuit, which would require a larger breaker and conductors in addition to the hard-wired EVSE, that would require a new permit.
  • Please refer to Residential EVSE Guidelines.
