High Bills: Checklist, cont.

How you can save energy and money now   You can save money and energy

One way to save Refrigerators
They use a lot of energy whether you're home or not. Older units can use over ten dollars a month. Consider replacing with an ENERGY STAR® model. Don't keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold. Keep the temperature at thirty-eight to forty degrees for fresh food compartments, five degrees for the freezer section, and for separate long-term storage freezers set the temperature at zero degrees.

One way to save Most computers
Most computers have a powersave feature that will automatically power the computer down when it has been idle for a set period of time, usually five or ten minutes. If you choose not to use the powersave feature, at least turn off the monitor when you leave the computer. Screensavers don't save electricity, just your screen.

One way to save Swimming pool, hot tub, or spa
During the off season when the pool is not in use, you can typically reduce your pool pump filter time to two to three hours a day. During the summer or when you're using the pool four to six hours a day. Keep hot tubs covered when not in use. Consider installing a timer for the heater so that it's on only when you want to use it.

One way to save Washer / Dryer
Wash full loads only, but don't overload. It takes as much energy to wash a full load as it does a small load. New tumble action front-loading clothes washers use less energy and water. To save energy on drying, line-dry heavy items like rugs, bedspreads, and clean the lint filter after each load to maintain full airflow and maximize drying efficiency. Clogged filters slow drying and wastes energy.

One way to save Compact fluorescent lights
Compact fluorescent lights should be used whenever you can. They give out more light per watt. These new lights can fit into most standard light sockets. You'll find that these bulbs use less energy and lasts seven times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs. SVP customers can purchase CFLs at reduced prices through our Plug-ins Catalog.
