SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Feb. 28, 2018) - Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara’s electric utility, now provides carbon-free electricity to all residential customers as the standard, default power supply. Building upon the City’s recent move away from power produced by coal resources, this momentous decision means that electricity generated for all Santa Clara residents produces no net carbon emissions.

Carbon-free electricity from SVP consists of 50 percent large hydroelectric power and 50 percent renewable energy sources that meet the emission-free standards set by the California Air Resources Board, including solar, wind, geothermal, landfill gas, and small hydroelectric power plants. This carbon-free power supply will not impact quality, reliability, or cost of electricity for residents.

SVP’s transition to carbon-free electricity for residents has been spurred by customer demand and larger efforts by SVP and the City of Santa Clara to meet the aggressive renewable portfolio standard and GHG emission reduction goals set forth by the City of Santa Clara’s Climate Action Plan. These include reaching 50 percent eligible renewables for all residential and commercial electric sales and reducing community greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent from 1990 levels.

The move to carbon-free electricity for residents builds upon SVP’s foundational work towards these goals. In 2016, SVP announced that it would stop sourcing electricity from coal-fired power plants. On January 1, 2018, this took effect and SVP’s entire power mix, including for commercial customers, is now produced without generation from coal-fired power plants. In addition, SVP has offered all customers the option to enroll in Santa Clara Green Power, its 100 percent renewable power program, since 2004. Program participants cover 100 percent of their electricity use with power from wind and solar facilities in California and the West.

By offering a full suite of clean energy solutions, SVP enables Santa Clara residents and businesses to live, work, and innovate with power that meets their needs and expectations. SVP’s efforts also demonstrate the power of taking local action to lessen climate impact in the face of changing federal priorities.
